PORTLAND – Maine College of Art today announced that it will be called Maine College of Art & Design, with initials and wordmark MECA&D. The College also unveiled a new strategic plan entitled Maine College of Art & Design Strategic Plan: Envisioning Our Future 2027.
“At one point we all realized that it was time to expand our name, restate our commitment to all artists and designers, embrace our evolution and place the value of inclusivity at the forefront of our work,” said Laura Freid, President of Maine College of Art & Design, in a press release.
Faculty members Drew Hodges and Steve Bowden ’97 led the wordmark design process, with contributions from alumna designer Hallie Mitchell ’17. Founder of Drewdesignco and SpotCo, Hodges is known for his work on Broadway musical brands, including Rent, Chicago, and Hamilton. Bowden, in addition to his roles on both the faculty and staff for the College, is a graphic designer.
